Mandala

Tavazzano | Italy

A gravity-based demolition system was used on the chimney stack at the Tavazzano and Montanaso thermoelectric power station. Before it collapsed, the chimney stack was entrusted to Paolo Baraldi, a young artist who painted it and turned it into a living mandala. A work of art, a symbol, where destruction implies the rebirth of that place. A video-assisted robot was then used to weaken its base, until it collapsed in the pre-defined direction.

Height: 60 metres Volume to be demolished: 815 tons
